The Thunderbird Spirit U16 girl’s soccer team won the Lily Nisen Memorial Soccer Tournament in Davis this weekend. The Spirit opened the tournament with a 1-0 win over the Davis Legacy and followed it up with a 3-0 win over the Capital FC Invasion. After losing 1-0 to the Danville Mustang Eagles in group play they avenged the loss with a 3-0 win over the Mustangs in the championship game. The Spirit had 2 goals each from Mia Horn and Amit Dhillon while Haylee Pedro, Colleen Turpen and Rebecca Lehman each added one. Spirit goalkeeper Madison Kelly allowed only one goal while the defense was led by Sarah Case, Makayla Modin, Haley St. George and Alaina Casazza. The Spirit controlled possession with strong midfield play from Lala Zabat, Sophia Ordonez, Joanna Chenaille and Megan Frizzie.
Sophia Ordonez scored a well placed second half goal chipping the ball over the goalkeeper’s head to lead the Spirit to the win. The goal broke a scoreless tie in a game that was hard fought and end to end. Madison Kelly played outstanding as the Spirit goalkeeper, keeping a clean-sheet and preserving the victory with a diving save with just moments left in the game. Defenders Sarah Case, Alaina Casazza, Makayla Modin and LaLa Zabat were stellar as they shut down the potent Solano offense. The midfielders and forwards overcame the tall grass of the Solano field to maintain an edge in possession. Colleen Turpen, Amit Dhillon and Sophia Ordonez controlled the middle while Rebecca Lehman, Jojo Chenaille and Megan Frizzie ran aggressively down the sidelines creating numerous scoring opportunities. Forwards Mia Horn, Haylee Pedro, and captain Haley St. George provided great pressure on the Striker defense which contributed immensely to the Spirit win.
