Spirit wins second straight league game.

Sophia Ordonez scored a well placed second half goal chipping the ball over the goalkeeper’s head to lead the Spirit to the win. The goal broke a scoreless tie in a game that was hard fought and end to end. Madison Kelly played outstanding as the Spirit goalkeeper, keeping a clean-sheet and preserving the victory with a diving save with just moments left in the game. Defenders Sarah Case, Alaina Casazza, Makayla Modin and LaLa Zabat were stellar as they shut down the potent Solano offense. The midfielders and forwards overcame the tall grass of the Solano field to maintain an edge in possession. Colleen Turpen, Amit Dhillon and Sophia Ordonez controlled the middle while Rebecca Lehman, Jojo Chenaille and Megan Frizzie ran aggressively down the sidelines creating numerous scoring opportunities. Forwards Mia Horn, Haylee Pedro, and captain Haley St. George provided great pressure on the Striker defense which contributed immensely to the Spirit win.

Goals from seven different players.

The Thunderbird Spirit U16 girls soccer team took first place in the Napa Wine Country Classic tournament this weekend. The Spirit started the tournament with a 3-0 win against the San Francisco Parrots. The Spirit tied the Danville Mustangs 2-2 and completed group play with a 2-1 victory over the Empire Wildcats to reach the finals. The Spirit won the championship with a convincing 5-1 victory over the DeAnza Force. The Spirit had goals from seven of their fourteen players including Rebecca Lehman (2), Haylee Pedro (2), Joanna Chenaille (2), Collen Turpen, Sophia Ordonez, Megan Frizzie and Mia Horn who had a hat-trick in the final game to seal the championship. Goalkeeper Madison Kelly led the defense composed of Sarah Case, Alaina Casazza, Makayla Modin, and Haley St. George. The Spirit controlled possession with strong midfield play from Amit Dhillon and LaLa Zabat. Next weekend the Spirit travel to Ripon to play the Fresno Nomads as they open their fall season in the Gold Division of the CYSA Cal Soccer League.
