This weekend the Thunderbird Spirit U15 girls soccer team became the first Vacaville United Soccer Club girls team to advance to the final four of the California Youth Soccer Association Cup. The Spirit made it to the final eight by defeating the Petaluma Ambush 4-3 in overtime with two goals from Haylee Pedro and one each from Makayla Modin and Megan Frizzie. Mia Horn and Avery McCollum added assists. Lala Zabat, Colleen Turpen, Amit Dhillon, Lauren Hesterman and Haley St. George controlled the middle of the field for the Spirit and helped secure the victory. The Spirit advanced to the final four with a 2-1 victory over the U16 Pleasanton Rage. Haylee Pedro headed in a goal off of a Rebecca Lehman corner kick and Joanna Chenaille scored the winning goal with an assist from Haylee Pedro. The Spirit defense frustrated the Rage with outstanding play from Sarah Case, Alaina Casazza, and goalkeeper Madison Kelly. The Spirit goes for the championship as the tournament wraps up this weekend in Elk Grove.
The Thunderbird Spirit wrapped up their league play with a well earned victory over the Solano Strikers. The win vaulted the Spirit into fourth place in the Gold Division of the California Competitive Soccer League. The first goal was scored on a deflection off a curling corner kick by Mia Horn. Rebecca Lehman added a 40 yard strike in the top netting to seal the victory. The Spirit controlled possession of the game with outstanding passing and ball movement against a formidable opponent in Solano who has been runner up in the last two Association Cup tournaments.
Middfielders Lala Zabat, Colleen Turpen, Sophia Ordonez, Joanna Chenaille, Makayla Modin, and Lauren Hesterman worked the ball up and down the field while defenders Alaina Casazza, Sarah Case, Haley St. George and Rebecca Lehman thwarted the Striker attack. The Spirit forwards Haylee Pedro, Amit Dhillon, Megan Frizzie and Mia Horn applied constant pressure to the Striker defense. Madison Kelly was rock solid in goal, smothering every Striker opportunity.
The Spirit opens the District Cup Tournament in Roseville against the Fair Oaks Strikers on Saturday December 4th.
