The Thunderbird Spirit U16 girls soccer team took first place in the Napa Wine Country Classic tournament this weekend. The Spirit started the tournament with a 3-0 win against the San Francisco Parrots. The Spirit tied the Danville Mustangs 2-2 and completed group play with a 2-1 victory over the Empire Wildcats to reach the finals. The Spirit won the championship with a convincing 5-1 victory over the DeAnza Force. The Spirit had goals from seven of their fourteen players including Rebecca Lehman (2), Haylee Pedro (2), Joanna Chenaille (2), Collen Turpen, Sophia Ordonez, Megan Frizzie and Mia Horn who had a hat-trick in the final game to seal the championship. Goalkeeper Madison Kelly led the defense composed of Sarah Case, Alaina Casazza, Makayla Modin, and Haley St. George. The Spirit controlled possession with strong midfield play from Amit Dhillon and LaLa Zabat. Next weekend the Spirit travel to Ripon to play the Fresno Nomads as they open their fall season in the Gold Division of the CYSA Cal Soccer League.
